Muslims often refer to The God as Allah. Allah is ‘The Universal God’ of everything, and does not exclusively refer to The God of the Muslims. Interestingly, this name is closely related to the Aramaic and Hebrew names for The God, Allaaha and Elohim. Therefore, Allah is simply the Arabic adaptation of the name of The God, which affirms that He is One singular God with no partners or equals. The name Allah in Arabic refers to the word “Al-Ilaah” meaning the ‘The Ultimate God’. It is unique, cannot be pluralized, and has no associated gender, which establishes that The God is exclusive and unique from everything that exists. Muslims continue to use this original Arabic name Allah for The God, since it perfectly expresses His unique qualities.
“Allah: there is no god but He, the Ever-Living, the Sustainer of the whole Universe. Neither drowsiness overtakes Him nor sleep. All that is in the heavens and in the earth belongs to Him. Who is there that can intercede with Him except by His own permission? He knows what is before the people and also what is hidden from them. And they cannot comprehend anything of His knowledge except what He wills. His throne (authority) extends over the heavens and the earth and the guarding of these does not weary Him. He alone is the Supreme and the Exalted.” [Qur’an: 2:255].
