Is Intellect an Enemy of Faith

The natural faculties that differentiate human being from the rest of the living beings is intellect, reasoning and wisdom. The Almighty God directly appeals to these faculties of human being in His book (i.e. The Qur’an) as quoted below:

  • In the creation of the heavens and the earth, and in the alternation of night and day, are signs for people of understanding. Those who remember Allah while standing, sitting (or reclining) on their sides, and reflect in the creation of the heavens and the earth, (and say): ‘Our Lord! You have not created this in vain. Glory to You! Save us, then, from the chastisement of the Fire. [Qur’an: 03:190-191]
  • Say: “The bad and the good are not equal, even though the abundance of the bad may impress you. So be conscious of God, O you who possess intelligence, that you may succeed.” [Qur’an: 05:100]
  • This is the Blessed Book that We have revealed to you, (O Muhammad), that people with understanding may reflect over its verses and those with understanding derive a lesson. [Qur’an: 38:29]
  • He bestows wisdom upon anyone He wills, and he who is given wisdom is in fact given great wealth, but only those with understanding take lessons from these things. [Qur’an: 02:269]
  • He it is Who has stretched out the earth and has placed in it firm mountains and has caused the rivers to flow. He has made every fruit in pairs, two and two, and He it is Who causes the night to cover the day. Surely there are signs in these for those who reflect. [Qur’an: 13:03]
  • Do they, then, not reflect on the Qur’an? Or are there locks on their hearts? [Qur’an: 47:24]
  • Do they not ponder over the Qur’an? Had it been from any other than Allah, they would surely have found in it much inconsistency. [Qur’an: 04:82]
  • Have they not seen how Allah originates creation and then repeats it? Indeed that, for Allah, is easy. [Qur’an: 29:19]
  • Do they not contemplate within themselves? Allah has not created the heavens and the earth and what is between them except in truth and for a specified term. And indeed, many of the people, in [the matter of] the meeting with their Lord, are disbelievers. [Qur’an: 30:08]
  • Or were they created by nothing, or were they the creators [of themselves]? Or did they create the heavens and the earth? Rather, they are not certain. [Qur’an: 52:35-36]
  • Indeed, in the creation of the heavens and earth, and the alternation of the night and the day, and the [great] ships which sail through the sea with that which benefits people, and what Allah has sent down from the heavens of rain, giving life thereby to the earth after its lifelessness and dispersing therein every [kind of] moving creature, and [His] directing of the winds and the clouds controlled between the heaven and the earth are signs for a people who use reason. [Qur’an: 02:164]

From the above references, it comes out clear that The God (Allah), after equipping us with cognitive and intellectual abilities, invites us to look for the observational-evidences in other words to use scientific faculties to explore The Gods’ existence and then Submit to Him and to obey Him.
